Juicing: A sure-fire way to optimize your health

Incorporating juicing into your diet can make for an extremely healthy, well-balanced lifestyle, especially for those who don’t consume fruits and vegetables on a regular basis.

We all know that fresh fruits and vegetables are key sources of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, as well as astonishing antioxidants that help boost your immune system’s power and promote health and longevity.  However, it can often be tiresome for people to eat fresh, raw produce, finding that they do not have the time to prepare a salad or plate of crudites.  Or maybe–quite simply–they are not motivated by the texture, appearance, or taste of certain fruits and veggies.

That even goes for some of us here at Anderssen’s Flaxrolls.  A few of us admit to avoiding spinach at any given turn, for example, or pretending not to notice the beets in the organic produce section.

This is where juicing comes in.  Not only are you receiving the benefits of the produce you are putting into your juicer, but you can create your own custom blends, experimenting with combinations of herbs and spices to elevate the flavour of your drink–you may find that, upon consuming fresh juices made to your liking, both your body and your palate will begin craving the tastes and the benefits.

If you think a cup of black coffee gives you a shot of energy first in the morning, try drinking fresh juice instead.  Your adrenaline levels will skyrocket without the jittery feeling that accompanies caffeine consumption.

“But I thought we need the fibre” is a common concern among those who are considering juicing for the first time.  Fibre, as any nutritionist will tell you, is definitely an essential part of one’s diet, particularly for colon and digestive health.  But here’s how juice extraction works: It removes the insoluble fibre from vegetables and fruits, allowing for an increased absorption of certain phytonutrients, while the soluble fiber persists into the juice.  Joe Cross, one of the most vocal proponents of juicing, states it quite succinctly: “By removing the fibers and consuming fruits and vegetables in liquid form, we are providing a nutrient delivery system to our bodies that allows individuals who would otherwise have difficulty consuming whole vegetables, the opportunity to reap the numerous benefits vegetables have to offer.”

At Anderssen’s Flaxrolls, we have a beautiful array of fresh, cold-pressed, 100% organic juices, made daily on the premises and all of which pair perfectly with any one of our tasty Flaxrolls.  Some of our blends include:

Green Classic (our most popular!): Green kale, celery, cucumber, green apples, lemons, parsley, and ginger.

Kiss Me Baby: Red kale, red beest, red apples, and mint.

Golden Roots: Carrots, golden beets, apples, lemons, ginger, and turmeric.

Good Morning Sunshine: Golden beets, carrots, grapefruit, and orange.

Just Orange: Exactly what it’s called.  Nothing but beautiful, organic, freshly-squeezed oranges.

Come down to 1682 Davie Street and get started on your new path. Who knows?  You may end up investing in a juicer down the road somewhere.
